Even lawyers make mistakes when it comes areas outside their area of expertise. Branter v. Smith, A-23-464 (August 27, 2024) is a prime example.
Bob Branter was a trial lawyer who lived in California. He apparently grew up in the Midwest. At one time he was romantically involved with Carol Smith, but the romance ended and they remained friends.
Bob owned a house in Ventura, California which was destroyed by a wildfire. Because of that, he allegedly couldn't purchase homeowner's insurance on a house in Nebraska. For the sake of this post, I'll take that as true but what a bizarre rule.

Check your beneficiary designations; especially for life insurance
Check your life insurance policies to make sure you have the correct people designated as your beneficiaries.
In divorce cases, the decree typically requires that a spouse who has a child support obligation to carry a life insurance policy until the children reach majority age. But after that time, it is probably not a good idea to keep your former spouse as a beneficiary. People, however, can forget and leave a former spouse on the policy. It happens all the time.

Begley elected by fellow attorneys. Again!
I was elected as an attorney alternate to the Judicial Nominating Committee, Supreme Court, Fourth District. I just completed a term as a regular attorney member on another Supreme Court Nominating Committee.
Attorneys apply for judgeships. The committee then interviews and passes onto the Governor qualified candidates. This is a good thing as some unqualified attorneys have applied for judgeships in the past and their names weren't advanced to the Governor. We don't elect judges in Nebraska (thank goodness!), but judges do stand for retention elections.
